Milling & Machining of Quartz Pistons for Automotive Combustion Research

At Pacific Quartz, Inc. we occupy a specialized niche for manufacturing precision components for the R&D community. Our ability to execute complex, tight-tolerance designs has made us the supplier of many critical components used by the automotive industry in conducting vital research to further scientific understanding of internal combustion engines.
We fabricated the quartz piston shown here to provide optical access to engines during these combustion studies. Constructed from high quality synthetic quartz, which has a large, flawless, single crystal structure, we milled and machined them with tight ±0.001" dimensional tolerances. Due to the complex geometries, we had to develop specialized procedures for grinding and polishing them to achieve the desired optical properties.
Both CMM and optical inspections confirmed that we satisfied the stringent customer requirements, and because of our high quality work, we have become the sole supplier of this component.
